Strategies for Addressing Link State Routing Protocol Vulnerabilities: A Panoramic View
نویسندگان
چکیده
The link state routing protocol is the most widely used intra-domain routing protocol, which is used to distribute and maintain routing information among various routers within a domain. Unfortunately, this protocol is vulnerable to several security attacks. These attacks may be as simple as packet sniffing or as sophisticated as the insider attack. Research has been done to enhance the security of the protocol, but either falls short of providing substantial security or suffers from practical implementation issues. In spite of all these efforts, the research world lacks a comprehensive threat model specific to the link state routing protocol. This article attempts to fill this gap by studying a large number of different kinds of attacks that might occur during the normal execution of the protocols and presents a comprehensive attack model that is aimed at guiding researchers working in the area of securing the link state routing protocol. The article then discusses the existing solutions that address some of the threats and suggests security mechanism for threats that have not yet been addressed. Finally, the need of a new routing framework is underlined that can address the common threats as well as the threats that were not considered in the past.

Improving Quality of Service Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using OLSR
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are constructed by mobile nodes without access point. Since MANET has certain constraints, including power shortages, an unstable wireless environment and node mobility, more power-efficient and reliable routing protocols are needed. The OLSR protocol is an optimization of the classical link state algorithm. OLSR introduces an interesting concept, the multipoint r...
متن کاملA Specification-Based Intrusion Detection Model for OLSR
The unique characteristics of mobile ad hoc networks, such as shared wireless channels, dynamic topologies and a reliance on cooperative behavior, makes routing protocols employed by these networks more vulnerable to attacks than routing protocols employed within traditional wired networks. We propose a specification-based intrusion-detection model for ad hoc routing protocols in which network ...
متن کاملA Cooperative Security Scheme for Optimized Link State Routing in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks
We consider the security of control traffic generated by proactive or table-driven link state protocols in mobile ad-hoc networks. Focusing on the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol, we provide a taxonomy of attacks and vulnerabilities, based on which we propose a security solution that rewards nodes depending on their cooperation in the exchange of routing information. The proposed s...
متن کاملOLSR-R^3: Optimised link state routing with reactive route recovery
The Optimised Link State Routing (OLSR) is a proactive routing protocol which relies on periodical broadcast of routing packets. However, due to the one-to-many relationship of broadcast traffic, the delivery of these packets can not be guaranteed by underlying MAC protocol, particularly in a congested condition. In this paper, the possible routing pathologies and failures of OLSR in a congeste...
